WHAT ARE COOKIES?

A “cookie” is a text file stored on the user’s computer when they visit a website, with the sole purpose of providing information each time the user returns to the same website. It is a kind of reminder of the website visited. The web server uses the cookie to send information stored on the user’s computer to their browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.) and this information will be reread and updated each time the user returns to the website. This allows the website to adapt automatically to the user. While browsing, users might also receive cookies from other websites on their computer (“third party” cookies), set directly by the operators of those websites and used for the purposes and according to the methods they establish.

Depending on their duration, cookies are divided into session cookies (temporary ones that are erased automatically when the browsing session ends, by closing the browser) and persistent cookies (those which remain stored in the computer until they expire or are erased by the user).

Depending on the function and purposes of use, cookie may be divided into technical cookies and profiling cookies.

TECHNICAL COOKIES

Certain cookies are used for electronic authentication, session monitoring and storage of specific information on users who visit a website. These so-called technical cookies are often useful to allow users to browse a website and use all its functions. Use of technical cookies does not require the user’s consent.
Analytics cookies are included in this category. These cookies collect information on how the user uses a website and allow its functioning to be improved. For example, analytics cookies show which pages are visited most frequently, check for recurrent patterns of use and assist in understanding any problems the user encounters in use.

PROFILING COOKIES

Other cookies may be used to monitor and profile users during browsing, study their Internet movements and consulting or consumption habits (what they buy, what they read, etc.), also in order to send advertising on targeted and personalised services. These are called profiling cookies. Use of said cookies requires prior acquisition of the user’s free and informed consent pursuant to Art. 7 of Regulation EU 2016/679 and current national regulations.

THIRD PART COOKIES

A website may also contain cookies from other websites and contents in various elements hosted on the page site itself, such as advertising banners, images, videos, maps or specific links to websites of other domains that reside on different servers to the one on which the website in question is located. In other words, these cookies are set directly by the providers of different websites or servers to this website. These are the so-called third party cookies, which are normally used for profiling. Use of these cookies requires prior acquisition of the user’s free and informed consent.
